Question about wireless internet and speed

Hello everyone, I have been looking around on this forum for about a week now, and have found many very helpful topics to read up on, but one question thats still in my head is how fast my internet connection would be with a wireless router and card, i have a microsoft 54mb/s router which came with a 802.11g wi-fi card which i am going to install in my new computer which i have ordered and should be here tomorrow (wednesday) hopefully. I'm just wondering what the speed of just surfing the internet would be like with this setup compared to a 108mb router and a cabled connection. Any help would be greatly appreciated

depends on your connection speed. i got 200 KB/s on a 3.5 Mb/s connection wirelessly. But on my schools connection i get well over 700 KB/s. going wireless definetely slows down the connection speed though cuz on that 3.5 Mb/s connection when i used a cord i got 420 KB/s.
 
oh, forgot to say that i doubt there would be much of a difference between the two routers unless you have one hell of a fast connection like a t1 line.
 
wireless will only slow down your speed if you have an internet connection speed faster then your wireless connection. 11b is 11mbit/sec, 11g is 54mbit/sec. most home internet services are not any faster then 12mbit/sec, most times between 3 and 6 mbit/sec. so unless you dont have full signal strength, or are connected to say a OC3 (155mbit/sec) then wireless is not ure speed bottleneck. its simple numbers

when calculating speeds, dont confuse megabits and megabytes.

it takes 8 bits to make 1 byte. thus, bits to bytes conversions are 8 to 1. to change bits to bytes divide by 8. to get from bytes to bits, multiply by 8.

so take my internet connection for example, its 3megabit down/768 kilobit up. 3megabit is 3000 kilobits. 3000kilobits divided by the 8 kilobits it takes to make a kilobyte equals 375 kilobytes down. upload is 768/8=96 kilobytes.

so, see what your internet connection speed is, and then see what you need!
