Question About Video Cards

Hi! I don't know much about video cards, so here goes. I saw a post on a site about nvidia and AMD/ATI. Did AMD but ATI? Are the cards as good as Nvidia---I mean the ATI, either before or after AMD bought them, if they bought them? I know that fedora doesn't support ATI, so I wondered if there was something wrong with the ATI cards. Also, can a 2 X 16 pcie card work on a motherboard with a pcie 1 X 16 slot? Where can I go for a comparison between ATI and Xvidia 7000, 8000, and 9000 series? Actually, I don't think I need the 8000 or 9000 series, since I won't be doing any gaming. Any and all responses willl be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

AMD bought ATI way back in 2006. While people have the own preferences, it's really up for debate as to which is better. And a good place to look at GPU specifications side by side is gpureview.com, although I find it also handy to look at Newegg reviews to determine the true quality of a card.

Everybody has there favorite mine is ATI but only because ATI charges a lot less for there cards. I believe that Nvidia cards have a little more power but charge more for there cards that is why I stick with ATI. ATI offers great performance at low prices and there is a lot of good sales at newegg on ATI cards right now.

We can help you pick a graphics card that will best suit your needs all we need to know is what kind of power supply you have and what you budget is.

I was told that linux has a lot more support for ATI cards than Nvidia. They might not support the newest or highest end cards but if you aren't gaming you could look into an older card that should be supported.

And yes, a PCI-E 2.0 X16 card will fit and work in a PCI-E 1.0 X16 slot.

Thanks for the responses. My specs are:

ASUS M2V-MX SE
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+
Super Talent 2048MB DDR2 800MHZ
Western Digital WD800JD 80GB SATA2
Lite-on 20X DVD-RW
Okia A-Power 500 Watt Power Supply

I want to get a new card, but I figure I can spend $40 on ebay for an older new card. Fedora said it didn't support my card, an ati x600 pro, so maybe it's just older cards.

Be careful buying a card with that power supply even though it is 500w most off brand power supply's do not put out as much as it says most will only output about 350w for a 500w power supply and for example it says 30A on the +12V rail you really only getting like 20A.

Thanks for the responses. Are there any programs that can show if my power supply is putting out the right amps and watts? Thanks.
