Question about the Internet. Is this true?

I need to get something straight. I was told that when you enter a URL into a web browser you are actually just entering in a “nickname” for the URL’s corresponding server’s IP address. In another words its like a skin for the IP address of the server you are trying to connect to. Is this true? Well if this is true then say I have two separate computers in my house with separate IP addresses and separate Internet connections. Could I just enter in the IP address of my other computer into Internet explorer and connect to my other computer via the Internet?

Yes, the URL you enter can be switched out for the IP address. Rather than copy and paste a bunch of stuff about it here's thewiki.

If you want to actually be able to do stuff on your computers you'll need some remote connectivity software like remote destop, VNC, etc
