Question about Sub Woofer and Sound Card...

Well im gonna buy one of them sub woofers which have 5 speakers. But someone said to me in order to buy them i will need a new sound card. Is this true? If you need to know what type of sound card i have can you please tell me how i can check this.

Its true if your existing soundcard cant handle it, what soundcard are you using right now? so we will have a better idea.:)
 
it doesnt depend on the sound card, the main thing is if the subwoofer can change between 5.1 and 2.1 set up. if it can, then your current sound card should be fine, and it will still come out of all speakers
 
Im trying to found out all the info on my sound card for you lot. Im having rouble thought. Heres what i done:


This is how i got the info on my sound card. I just went on My computer properties then clicked on the hardware tab then device manager. In my device manager i chose "Sound, video and game controllers. Then things like:

Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
RealTek AC'97 Audio for VIA (R) Audio Controller
Video Codecs

From these i chose RealTek AC'97 Audio for VIA (R) Audio Controller

Under the properties for this i found out some info i think may help out with the sub woofer info. Here It Is:

Driver Provider: Realtek Semiconductor Corp

Driver Date: 12/19/2003

Driver Version: 5.10.0.5420



If you need more info, can u tell me what u need and how i can do it plz
 
To make this simple, you can look in the back of your computer where your onboard sound card is located. 5.1 capable cards will have 3 holes for speaker input (front channels, rear channels, center/sub) More often than not they will be color coded as green (front channels), black (rear channels), and orange (center/sub). Additionally there will probably be an input for a microphone. If you do not have a 5.1 capable sound card, check out newegg.com. You should be able to pick up a quality 5.1 card for around $60.

But would this be a true 5.1 suround sound?

If your gonna spend the money on a 5.1 surround sound setup then another $30. on a cheap Soundblaster Live! is certainly worth the investment.

lol i did buy another sound card in the end. and what do you mean by true 5.1 surround sound?
