ok guys and gals so i just purchased a tv from bestbuy and you are supposed to be able to hook up a laptop to it. So for video i hooked it up via VGA cable, the video works perfect, but now for audio i plugged a mini stereo plug (aka headphone jack?) into the VGA/DVI Audio In jack on the tv, but i get no sound out of the speakers, any idea what i'm doing wrong? or any other ideas of how i could hook it up to get sound and video?

the help is greatly appeciated

First of all, have you connected headphones to the laptop to see if they work? You may have to go into Control Panel / Sound (or some variant) to configure the default. Oh, and turn up the laptop volume if it's zero!

ya ive checked the headphones they work, and then i did turn the volume up, and i had read elsewhere to check the default, tried that too and it didn't fix the issue

ok so i actually went ahead and tried hooking up another laptop to the tv to see if that one would work so i could rule out it being the tv. and well the 2nd laptop actually did work, so it is not the tv, so now my question is what could it be on the computer that is not set up correctly?? the laptop it wont work on is a Dell with Vista on it, and the one that did work is an alienware with XP on it, any ideas any1?

The situation makes no sense but at least you made a good test.

You already confirmed that headphones work in the laptop. That is the connection you are using for the TV, right? Unless the cable/plugs you are connecting to the TV are broken, the audio signal must be arriving at the TV, exactly the same as when you use the other laptop.

Cheap headphones will probably need a lot less volume than when you are connecting to external devices. You said you turned the volume up, just make sure you did. Check the audio mixer for levels and muted I/O.

so ya the headphone jack is the jack i'm using for the tv and its the same cables i tried for both laptops, worked with the xp one but not the vista one, and yes i double checked to make sure the volume was up and it still didn't work. I checked the audio mixer for levels and there really isnt much to change on the vista one but as far as i can see it is up. what could i be doing wrong?

You could try connecting the audio output to any other device that has a mini-jack line-in.

Unless there's something staring you in the face, it should work. An output that works, a cable that works, an input that works. It can't be an impedance issue. What can one say?

i havent got a chance yet to check the audio output with another device but i will, but just curious is there any Services that are sound related that i can make sure are on, just to double check ya know

I had a look at my services, nothing obvious. All functions use services to some extent (eg Plug and Play). I found one for my sound card manufacturer in Component Services but related to CDROM access. I cannot see how those would come into play going from headphones to a line-out.
