Question about buying a used computer

A friend told me about it and now I have been thinking about it and it does make sense. How do I know if I was to buy a used computer off of someone it does not have some kind of illegal stuff on it like porn that has been erased but still on the hard drive? I was looking at buying a lap top off of craigs list and found a good deal but now I am scared to do it. What should I do? THANKS for the help!!
 
Buy a brand new hard drive too, then fit the hard drive and destroy the original.

But, then again, how do you know that the "brand new" hard drive hasnt got anything on it?
 
As long as you do a full format, you're fine. Whatever data there once was can only be recovered by professionals, and it will not have any effect on you using it. In all honesty, I'd be more worried I'm being sold dodgy components that are about to die.
 
There are guides on the internet, and people do make their illegal money by buying used hard drives and stealing bank information off it.

But to the topic at hand, as long as you're not in a federal investigation of some sort, you're fine.
 
i DO NOT Reccomend buying a used computer. It could have a virus, In which case it's more money to get a windows install disk, Unless you are a linux user.
