why do I get the impression that I haven't upgraded much?

You upped your peak power by a clean 100 watts- thats good enough. It really depends on which one gives a cleaner +12v. If the 300watt one gives a better +12v, then "downgrade" back. Your system doesnt really need anything bigger anyways.

what, really?
everyone (in the forum) was saying that I need a better PSU, I have 2 HDDs, 2 DVD-RW, Firewire 400, USB 2.0, etc. My old PSU would have been fine for this rig?

Well, your system would run fine with the old one, just would probably have problems like mine has had. I've had two hard drives go bad because of the crappy PSU (250W!) that Dell originally put in this compy. So, I would stick with your new one, it will provide a lot more stable power and not damage your components.

I didnt realize you had all that stuff- sry bout that, but make sure the +12v is good on your new one anywayz.

Don't be sorry, I'm the PSU newbie, I have no idea how they work.

PS as I've mentioned in other threads; with my new PSU installed whenever I shut the PC down it immediately turns back on.

The new one has dual +12V rails, the first one didnt. And you also increased the peak power.
