Ps3 memory question

Okay so ive decided to get a Ps3 when the new GTA game is released.

but looking at its specs i noticed this

* 256MB XDR Main RAM @3.2GHz
* 256MB GDDR3 VRAM @700MHz

Now i know this system is powerfull and will be great but why did they only put that amount of ram in?
i thought it would have been at least 1Gig of ram,How does the ps3 cope at gaming with only that much memory?

specs from here btw :)

i think the ps3 processor is... PowerPC-base Core @3.2GHz

now i heard it has 8 processors or something but surely it cant be 8x PowerPC-base Core @3.2GHz :D

i wonder what pc graphics card the ps3 is equivilent too? :P

because the PS3 doesnt have a stupid amount of its memory being tied up with an operating system like windows and the various other processes a PC runs

yeah i know that but still for gaming it seems extremely low :D

PS3 has a processor that includes a main processor joined to eight small processors that are optimised at running tasks like physics, ai and 3D one of the smaller processors is dissabled so that the processors can be made more cheap. Don't worry about the ram the ps3 clearly has enough to do great games. PC's need more ram as they have more applications to run at the same time as a game plus some pc games are vast war simulators that need huge amounts of ram. Lots of pc games have larger gaming enviroments and more content so more ram is needed.

On wikipedia it says it has a graphics card very similar to the 7800GTX.

Yes it is, Nvidia jut altered the 7800's architecture for the Ps2

Also the Ps3 only needs a small amount of ram because it is all dedicated to the game, and @ 3.2ghz speed for ram...you can expect it to be fast enough to make up for the lack of amount.

All the other little things that aren't present in the background (OS, processes, services) is helpful, as it wouldn't work if these were present.. but the biggest factor is simply that PC games and PS3 games are made differently. They don't require a alot RAM to do what PC games do.

This is typical of consoles.
Halo 2 was pretty fine and xbox only had

733 MHz Mobile Celeron
64 MB DDR SDRAM at 200 MHz
GPU and system chipset: 233 MHz
