Programs running very slow and crashing

Recently my laptop (lenovo y500) has been randomly slowing down and programs would randomly crash. Now it has got to the point where I can barely open anything at all and what I can open just crashes straight away.

When it first started happening it also corrupt my windows 8 and since I didn't have an install disk I decided to switch to linux. Which was slightly better but still caused problems. So I got an install disk for windows 7 and put that on there. But now I can barely do anything on my laptop. It can't even turn itself off properly.

My guess is that you may have memory issues. Have you ran a memtest yet? Was windows 7 running ok when first installed it? How long did it take before it messed up? Have you installed any crap software?

No I'll try to run a men test now and yes when it was first installed it was running ok for about a day . And the only thing installed onto it was steam and 1 game from steam and google chrome. I also never visited any pages on chrome other than the steam page and the google chrome page.

Edit: ok I ran the memtest but no errors were found.

Then possibly hard drive is failing. I would suggest malware but you said this happens in linux too. So not sure whats going on. Do a diagnostic on the hard drive using the manufacturers disk diagnostic utility.

Sorry, I worded it terribly, the problem didn't actually persist on linux, I had separate/ unrelated problems with linux.

Back up all files and settings and perform a factory restore.

There's a button just behind the power socket. Shut down your laptop and press that button and then just follow the on screen instructions.

Instant new machine again.
