Problems with loading games

Hey all another problem... this time not with my computer..

So my roommate wiped his harddrive the other day... I have been helping him get everything running , everything works fine except games on his computer... the errors that have come up are as follows

1. DirectX failed to initialize hit ok to terminate

2. This application has failed to start because Xlive.dll was not found reinstaling application may fix this problem..

Try updating DirectX to the latest version. You can find it on the Microsoft's download page.
