problem with wireless internet connection

I am having a problem. We use a Linksys Broadband router ver 4 and a Linksys adapter for our Insight Broadband internet. Here lately the computer with the adapter does not want to stay connected. Usually to get it working I have to unplug the router and plug it back in. Normally the computer with the router doesn't have any problems but tonight it quit working to.

Seems like I started having trouble when I made it a secure connection. I made it secure using WEP 64 bit encryption.

I thought it could have been my computer making it lose connection so I reformatted but it still won't stay connected. Could I have a bad router or adapter? Or could it be the cable modem? The router is probably around 1 year old and the adapter is only a couple months old.

I talked with some different people from Linksys. They told me some things to try but none of them worked. If I can't get an answer from here I am going to contact Linksys again.

If you bought a cheapo adapter, it's more than likely the adapter. It also never hurts to upgrade the firmware on the router.

Well, it does sound like it might be the router. Since you have to unplug it and plug it back in to work. Which Linksys router do you have? The WRT54g series? Or which one. Also, what you can test is to have one of your pc plugged in directly to the modem itself and run it for like a day to see if it drops any of your connections.

The model of the Router is BEFW11S4 ver4. I didn't think about this before but the Router is wireless b and the adapter that I'm using is wireless g. Would that cause problems?

How do I upgrade the firmware version? Right now, the current firmware version is 1.50.10, Jan 16 2004. I would say it is about time to upgrade the firmware.

Well, the router seems like an older model since it is only supporting wireless b. Your wireless cards should be fine since it's G, it should be downwards compatible with B also.

Your firmware is outdated. Get the newest one from linksys here:
http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Sate...826220&pagename=Linksys/Common/VisitorWrapper

Then try again. If not, it's probably best to get a newer router that is G compatible also which will give you better wireless speeds as opposed to B.

Well I updated the firmware for the router. Now it stays connected longer but still quits on me.

I still wonder if using a wireless g adapter on a wireless b router could cause problems. On one the lights on the router it says wireless b. That is the light for my computer.

Do you think I should buy a wireless g router and see if it works? If it doesn't does that mean that it is the modem is bad? If it is the modem, would I have to go through our ISP(insight) to get a new one?

One other thing off subject, 2 of my family members have Insight Broadband and they have different modems then what I have. For some reason, they can download stuff a whole lot quicker than what I can. One of them just lives right down the road. I don't know what brand of modems they use. I didn't look at the modem that close. All I know that it is gray and lays down flat instead of standing up. The one I use is a Motorola. Not sure which model. Could the modem be the reason they can download stuff quicker?

It shouldn't be that. B to G.
Most G cards should be downwards compatible with B, or they should if they aren't. Reason is that B is just slower than G, so it would be great if you can get a G compatible router so your router and card can interact at the most responsive and fast method possible. The light is on B because that's what the signal is, since your router isn't capable of G signals, it sends out B only and your card is accepting a B signal also only.

As for the modem, did you get one from your isp provider? Or did you buy one yourself. If you got a lease from them, it's probably not the greatest modem ever. If you are willing, you can buy a new one.

For your friend's modem, it could be that he has a faster plan than yours. The modem can be a factor in the speeds depending on if it's a poorly built and made one, etc. Motorola are good, I have a surfboard and works perfectly with a linksys wrt54gs. Check which modem you have.

I got the modem from our ISP. And the modem is Motorola Surfboard sb5100.

I will try to buy a wireless g router pretty soon. What model and version would be good to get? I heard that version 1 has the most memory(32mb). Is this true?

Thanks for all the help, computerhakk.

Don't be surprised if you buy a new router and it still screws up. I'm almost certain that the router is not the problem.

If you don't think it is the router, do you think it is the modem? Why don't you think it is the router causing problems?

I'm pretty sure it is not the adapter because it is only a couple months old. It's not a cheapo either. It is a Linksys Wireless G.

Before I started using this card, I was using a Linksys Wireless B adapter and it did the same thing.

Well, since you have a linksys Wireless G card already. The best choice would be to get another linksys router. The WRT54g series is a good router for about 50 bucks, in that neighborhood. If it turns out that it isn't the router, you can always take it back for a return; so no big deal there.

If it is not the router and it is the modem causing problems, if I buy a new modem myself off ebay, would I have to go through Insight to have them activate the modem or whatever? Or will I just be able to plug it in and it will work? Or do you think that Insight will provide one for free?

You can, but I'd recommend you getting at a local store and if there is any problems and it turns out not to be it, it'lll be easier to make a return. If you really want to get it online, I'd recommend other places such as www.newegg.com, www.outpost.com, www.tigerdirect.com, and many others which would be a better choice over ebay and depending on what it is, may be cheaper.

As for letting them know, I'm not sure what you mean by "Insight" but if you mean your ISP provider, I believe you have to call them and tell them the make a model of the new modem and the mac address for that modem.

Well I bought a Linksys Wireless G with speedbooster WRT54g ver 6 at Walmart. The first night I hooked it up, the computer that is hooked up to the router kept on kicking my dad off the internet. But it never did kick me off. What would be causing this. Could it be something on the computer causing it?

BTW, he unplugged the modem and the router to get it working again and he was still able to browse the internet with everything unplugged. Is that because of the memory the router has?

I don't know what's going on. I am starting to get frustrated.

i had the same router, the same issue happened to me, call linksys, its most likey the firmware or hardware. For this rounter you need to download the firmware upgrading program, you should call linksys and they will send you to thier FTP site that has all the files on it that you need to download.

And tot he question above, it sounds like your router is not assinging the right ip's to the computers, you ip addys should read..192.168.1.5, 192.168.1.7 ect...

The ip address for the router(the pc that my dad is connected to) is 74.138.60.214 and the ip address for the computer with the adapter(which is mine) is 192.168.1.100.

Now I am getting disconnected from the internet. One of the times it quit, a message popped up on the taskbar saying something about an IP address conflict. I double clicked it and nothing happened.

Can someone help me out? I have been looking around on the router setup page and am confused about some things. The local IP address is totally different from the router IP address. Also the MAC address is different than what the adapter says. Should it be the same?

I don't know if this is possible but could the computer with the usb adapter(the one I'm on) cause the internet to quit working on both computers?

It seems like if I leave my computer off all day, the computer connected to the router will stay connected to the internet. Also, it only seems to quit working when you are doing stuff on the internet. Sometimes it would quit working but a few minutes later it will start working again on its own.

I had somebody from our ISP setup a monitor for the cable modem to see it was losing signal. They said it never did.

Does anybody have any idea how to fix this problem?
