problem with network/internet

2 part problem.
Set up: modem to switch1 to switch2 to computer
First of all, after resetting the cable modem, only one computer can get online. All the other computers say "little or no connectivity". The computer appears to be directly connecting to the cable.

2nd Problem: When connecting my laptop to modem or switch1, the laptop detects it, but obviously no connectivity. However, when connecting to switch2, it doesn't detect it. When using my brothers laptop with exactly the same setup, it detects all.

just a note, these were all working until i played around with the network.

Why SW1 & SW2? Have you tried to connect modem to SW1 to computer directly and see if it is working or not?

What are the switches types?

Do you have fixed IP for the router (Modem)?

Are you using firewalls on computers ? Check the settings and shut off the windows XP firewall, it's worthless and creates problems with most network connections.

Probably the ip address settings in your notebook needs modification. If both notebooks are using the same setup, make sure that they are identical, firewall, ip settings, DNS, everything, you might be missing a little tip.

im guessing you have windows xp with SP2, i always get that eroor at least once a month, infact i got it today, i just uninstalled my cable modem (my computer) and all the network adapters on all computers involved, and then it seemed to pick everythng up perfect
