Problem with Microphone

My motherboard has onboard 7.1 surround sound. I've got some el-cheapo desktop speakers that do the job and I have no complaints about them. All was well and good until I bought a microphone to have audio converstations over instant messenger. Now, there is an echo in the speakers and I don't know why. The echo happens when I use the mic to chat over messenger and also for utilities such as when the printer announces "Printing Started", etc. What setting am I missing? How do I get rid of this? (I have XP Pro)

Any settings that have an echo effect that you can turn on/off?

That was my first guess, but I can't find anything.

Its in your properties. Go to your control panel>sound and fiddle around there isa way to turn it off.
