Problem during playing games

Hi everyone,

Im translating the posts at a dutch forum about my problem and posting them here. Here is the first one:

A few months ago i have upgraded my pc, a Dell Dimension 5000. This is my current pc:

CPU Type: DualCore Intel Core 2 Duo E8400, 3000 MHz (9x333)
Motherboard Name: Asus P5QPL-AM
Video Adapter: ATI Radeon HD 3870
Memory Size: 2048 MB
Total Physical Memory: 2048 MB
Monitor Name: Fujitsu Siemens Amilo SL 3260W
Monitor Type: 26" LCD
System Version: Windows XP Home Service Pack 2 (I have tried to install SP3 a couple of times already, but somehow it doesnt work)

While im playing a somewhat more heavy game, like "Test Drive Unlimited", "Colin Mcrae Dirt 2" and most of all "Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2", every few minutes my screen goes black for 20 seconds or so (and i dont hear any sounds anymore either), and doesnt get a signal anymore. Then when the game works again, i see the following error:

f_uhyqgj4m_ec20ddc.jpg

When i click "Send error report", my pc suddenly wants to send an error about something totally different. I dont remember what it was, but it hasnt helped me.

So usually i get an image again, but it also happend a few times, that the image did not return. So i have quit the game using taskmanager, but when i then run any game, it doesnt work anymore. The most precise error i got for a game, was the following:

I have also installed the latest drivers for my video card + the latest Direct X, but it didnt help.

Once, i had also got the error along with the first one:

Also, after the image didnt return and i return to windows, every window stutters while moving, and some sites do aswell.

On my previous pc everything still worked fine, excluding the low FPS in many games.

And the main info in the other posts:

The guy who tried to help me told me to look at some values in the log files of Everest. Here are the results: http://crashdaycenter.ucoz.com/LogEnStat.zip

He said the most odd thing is my power supply is a 12V and it runs at only 8V. Which is way too low.

Also He asked me what power supply i got. It is a "AOpen Z400-08FC (400W PEAK)".

Then he told me the power supply might not be strong enough for my pc (even though my previous power supply was 100W less).

This is where we got stuck, since i dont know anyone with a stronger power supply to test another one and buying another one seems pretty expensive.

I hope someone can help me out!

ps: I didnt know where to post this, but i suppose this place is alright.

i'm not all to sure because i'm no expert at... well... anything, but maybe your graphics card is not good enough?
isn't the 3xxx series sorta old?
I think the 3870 was realeased in 2007 if that helps

don't quote me cos i am no expert, i'm just throwing out some ideas.

sorry about my crap advice :P

Well, thanks for replying: any constructive comments are welcome!

My video card shouldnt be too old/not good enough as i can play the latest games with enough Frames Per Second ;) (on max at 1920x1200 pixels, but antialising at 4x and vsync off)

Actually i had a 3870 and it struggled on crysis at 1280x1024 with 2xAA on high settings.

I upgraded to a 4850 it made a lot of difference. 320 stream processors vs 800 stream processors... it's like night and day. plus the 4xxx series cards have improved AA performance.

1920x1200 is a lot for a 3870, even a 4850 would struggle in a lot of games like crysis, gta4 etc. an ati 4870 or nvidia GTX 260 can generally handle those high resolutions.

Not much is your system is a bottleneck, and on XP 2gb of RAM is more than enough for games. your GPU is getting outdated, i should know, i had one. (and shipped it off to Aastii, to replace his 8600GT :P)

As for your problem, have you tried disabling the VPU recovery? sometimes it can reset the driver if it just hangs for a second insetad of when it stops responding.

Have you done windows updates recently? you have service pack 3?

I think your GPU might be faulty. have you overclocked it at all? what are your temps? use GPU-Z and HWMonitor to confirm clock speeds and temperatures.

You might want to consider reformatting and reinstalling windows, but you will need to download your drivers and any programs you use again. Only do this if you have a windows xp install disc and a valid cd key.

 i just had the first error i posted while only selecting files...

I dont have SP3 as it always fails to install. Also, I havent overclocked my GPU. I now got GPU-Z, so ill play a game and see what happens and then get back asap.

Thank you for your reply!

Ok i have played Test Drive Unlimited untill i had to go (now) and when i gone to look at the GPU's temperature it was at 76°C. I hope this helps.

76c is fine for a 3870. is yours the sapphire single slot one by any chance? thats what i had.

yep thats mine :) i guess i dont have to expect another post of you anymore today, seeing you live in NSW ^^

edit: oh i almost forgot to say my harddisk, my father says it is, started making all crazy sounds and then pc crashed to blue screen. code: "0x000000F4 (0x00000003, 0X897FCS80, 0X897FC6F4, 0X805D1206)". but i googled and no results are given. I thought my harddisk getting a little hot wasnt a major issue, because the guy on the dutch forums said it isnt. but maybe it does get too hot afterall? (see http://crashdaycenter.ucoz.com/LogEnStat.zip)

Please install speedfan and use the HDD S.M.A.R.T test and see if anything odd comes up. if it warns you about anything look into it.

Is the HDD an IDE one?

I installed Speedfan and gone to the smart section, tried the full and quick test but both didnt seem to ever stop (i had the full one running for 3 hours... and decided to cancel it). So then just the online analysis was left. Here a pic:

I hope this is what you mean?

Also, i have no clue how to find out if my harddisk is an "ïde one", so please tell me how to find that out ;)
