i have a non ethernet based printer. it only has USB. it is installed on my computer. can i "network" it some how? like put the printer on a server computer and access the server to print?

Here's How To Set Up A Networked Printer....

Follow these steps on the computer that the printer is hooked up to.

1) Go to the Printers and Faxes Screen in Control Panel.

2) Right Click on the printer you'd like to share. Go to properties, then to
sharing.

3) Fill out the information and click the proper boxes. If the computer using
the printer is using an older version of windows, click the box in green
(see picture below)

Here's How To USE A Networked Printer....

Follow these instructions on the PC's USING the printer....

1) Navigate to "My Network Places" in Windows XP, or "Network
Neighborhood" in older versions of Windows.

2) Find the computer with the printer within the workgroup. Double click on it.

3) Then, double click on the shared printer icon and it will automatically set
up the printer on the computer you are on.

-- For all this to work you would already have to have file sharing set up.
If you dont...look here for how to set it up. http://www.computerforum.com/showthread.php?p=293758#post293758

ok this is not working. like i said i have XP on this computer and win2k on the other. win2k is being a bitch. how the eff do i get win2k to work this networks? i'm sorry i be more descritive in what is going on b/c i dont get whats happening. on XP i can see the other computer but i cant access it. this printer i am trying to install is not a network printer, it is USB. plz help!

First off, you didn't say that you could see and access the XP computer from the 2K computer, so, can you? :) Make sure that you have your firewall and file and print sharing configured correctly in the 2K compy as well (although that shouldn't matter, but you never know with Windows...). With regards to that, what does the computer do when you can't access the 2K computer from the XP one? (error messages and what-not)

Finally, if this doesn't work, you can get a print server for the printer, but that costs around $70 for a wired one, or $100 for wireless retail (online of course will be cheaper). The other course of action would be to get a network printer, HP has a wired printer (the 6940) for around $130 retail or a wireless (the 6980) for around $150.
