price differances

1- US dollars are worth slightly more than AUS dollars (1usd=1.03aud)
2- It costs money to ship things there
3- Australia has ridiculous import laws
4- Companies can jack the price up even higher and blame it on reasons 1-3

Not to mention the 2 products you used as an example aren't even close to similar. The 4GB 5970 with a 3rd party cooler is going cost a lot more than the 2GB 5970 with stock cooling.

Also remember that the Australian site includes tax. Sites like Newegg.com in the US don't include sales tax unless you're purchasing in a state with a Newegg warehouse.

Tax is what really shoots places like NZ and Aus in the foot. Here GST (Goods and Service Tax) just bumped up to 15%! If you take away tax it becomes fairly competitive depending on the exchange rate and product. Because the US dollar is so weak right now it's a great time to buy from the states if you can.

My biggest issue isn't the pricing. It's the selection. I used to buy everything from Newegg when I lived in the states. They always had every motherboard, graphics card, PSU, case, etc under the sun. Now the company I work at here (which has more buying power than any shop in NZ) has a hell of a time get anything non-mainstream. I mean we're talking weeks here for... let's say an EVGA SR-2 motherboard.
