Plug and play wireless?

Hey All,

I will be visiting family in Europe for the holidays. All they have is a desktop connected directly to a DSL/Cable modem.

Would it be possible for me to simply plug in an access point so I can use my laptop? I am only there for a couple of weeks and prefer to just “plug-and-play.”

Or will I have to connect a wireless router and do the whole set up/configuration thing?

Thanks in advance

Well, if you have a hub, the easiest way is to take that and wire your connections to the hub. If not, you might need a wireless router which broadcasts the signal so that the access points can receive the signal. And if you do have a wireless router, since it's just them and you, you can just set it to automatic detect without manually configuring the router up, with exception to the encryption of course.

As long as:

1) You can configure the AP to their network
2) You can sufficently power the AP
3) Do not have tons of interference

You have to have something acting as a DHCP server for the AP to properly work, so you may just want to plug it in when you want to use it.
