Help I am trying to link my laptop to my PC. I have got an internal wirless card in laptop and usb dongle in desktop, I also have a router.

I have managed to get the internet on my laptop no worries, but I now want to network laptop to desktop so I can see files on desktop.

I have had the artical 871122 error code so changed the settings to let windows manage settings. Then used a USB stick to transfer key and all seemed to go ok and it said laptop was installed on network. But now I cannot see the Desktop from laptop.

One thing I could not do was find the "use simple file sharing" checkbox and tick it. I know where it should be as I can find it on my laptop but it is simply missing from the same are of my desktop. (It seriously is not there!)

Any help tor the technically bewildered?

Thanks

Are you using Windows XP? IF you are, you need to run the Network Setup Wizard. It will let you name your network and then save a single file to a disk (floppy, cd, or pocket drive). all you need to do is run that file on all the computers you want networked. Theny ou will be able to share folders, drives, printers and other devices on your network.

Make sure you run the file on ALL computers you want networked (shouldnt matter if theyre wireless or not, as long as they are affiliated with the same router)

This page should help you out a lot.

Let me know how everything works out :)

Thanks guys, I don't want the desktop to be wireless. Habanerosky I did exactly what you said and it said it was successful but I cannot see my desktop on the laptop, any ideas?

Thanks

No not blank just cannot see the desktop or any of its files. You know what I mean? My desktop is not showing up in the network folder.

Well you need to go to the physical file of you desktop (<OS drive):\documents and settings\<profile name>\desktop) go into the properties of the desktop folder and enable share.

Ok what the F**k? I have installed the network again and again and nothing is happening!!!! When I install it it all says success, then when I try to share the files on desktop but the tickbox is greyed..... Reason suggested was that there is no network. Please help guys, I'm on the verge of F**king this heap of S**T out the window!!

Are you using Norton Internet Security on your laptop?

If so you need to configure Norton on your laptop to allow network traffic. The link below tells you how to do this or troubleshoot other home networking problems:
