Photo Editing

So I'm starting to want to edit my photos to make them look better. I'm editing settings and the pics look good, but I don't want to over do it. So I was wondering if there were settings I should always change, not touch, ect. Most of my photos are of cityscapes and whatnot, but if some one can post before and afters and give some tips, that'd be great.

Thanks.

Well, it all depends on the individual shot. You can't have the same set of changes done to different pictures and expect to like how they all look.

What I usually do is mess around with the curves, sometimes saturation, and sharpness.

What format are you shooting your pictures with?

When i was shooting Jpegs, I used to play with saturation and contrast. Now that I'm shooting in RAW format, I also play with white balance.

If you're not satisfied with what you get, try again :)

if your camera supports shooting in RAW, i suggest you try that out and open your images in Photoshop's Camera Raw and just play around with the sliders. ;)

I'm shooting in RAW now, I want to edit the pics, but don't want to overdo it. But I guess I'll have to just do it by eye for each pic.

Also, I don't want to make a new thread, unless I have to, but has anyone used a Gorillapod? Is it worth it? lol.

I have a small gorillapod for my smaller cameras, and it works real good. Worth carrying around as you can use it pretty much anywhere.

I'll look into getting one to carry around. I've ran into a few situations where a tripod would have been nice, but don't want to carry around a full size one.

Is there any other way to do it other than by eye? I don't think you can smell the settings or hear the detail :P

Oh ha-ha! :P
