Password protect a networked harddrive

I have an external harddrive and am looking to share it over a network. however I want to limited the number of persons able the access it, so I'm thinking that by putting a password on it would be the best job.

The people who will be using the hard drive should have full rights to it, ie. edit and change files on it.

is there any freeware program(I am a student after all!!) out there which can achieve this. The few I have seen seem to mention mounting the harddrive as a virtual harddrive which doesn't seem like the best idea.

Any help greatly appreciated,

well, you can just set up permissions without any software.
All you have to do is in share folder tab, there is some place you can set the password or limit the number of person you want to let in
