Paper clip jump start?

Hello!
I heard a few people talking about it and have no idea how it works :P
I pasted below the best information I heard about it.
I have no clue :P
Please let me know.
Thanks!

refer to the motherboard manual to see which 2 pins the case power button get connected to. use a small screwdriver or paperclip to briefly touch the power button pins at the same time. it should respond immediately by powering the processor HSF, if you hear more than one beep or if it shuts off by itself something is wrong and you should get some assistance from a friend.

When you look in the board diagram found in the manual to see where the two thin wires from the power button plug in is the same two pins on a small block of pins for that as well as the PLED(power led), HDLED(if one on case hard drive activity), reset button, board speaker, and the like. That may or may not also have some pins for usb if not on a second block.

For simply testing the board or suspecting a bad power button you would press a small metal object like a paper clip against the two power pins there to fire up the board or entire system. The button usually found on the front of a case is a momentary contact. likewise you simply tap the two pins with a clip.

Hehe, I've done that before. Probably not the safest methods, but my phillips head screwdriver works quite well for shorting the power pins and powering a computer ;)

Everything seems correct there. It should either work, or you may get a series of beeps, or no power depending if there's problems.

Usually when the pins are jumped is when someone will have the board, video card only, and supply set aside from the case with the board on a non conductive surface to troubleshoot. Being outside of the case you won't have a power button to press. The other time while in the case was mentioned earlier when a power button is suspect. Just remember not to hold anything there for more then 2 or 3 seconds since that is a momentary type of contact not a thrown switch.

When you bench test a motherboard without a case thats the only way to start it, by jumping the two power button pins :D

I Just tried that (screwdriver) and it works. I'm going to have to say that that's really cool.

How would you turn it off (Without turning of the mains power of PSU)?

For how long, i tried for a a few second and PC eye says you shouldn't have it for to long.

Should i try longer?

Edit:

Ok, i just tried, yep it's good.

My PC won't let me hard shut it down for about the first 10 seconds of turning on.
