overheating HELP!!

I paid $1600 for this laptop 2 years ago it was awesome but now I am having many problems. The laptop overheats and I dont know why it never did it before it cannot be on a flat surface or will burn out is about 1 hour. I always keep it level or have a house fan on it. How can I fix this Can i buy a better laptop fan or slap a new one in?? I know there short in space but anything inturnal no exturnals
