Sorry i am new to doing mods to computers. But if i upgrade my motherbored and CPU and just plug it in will it just start up with the old OS or do i have to buy a new OS
 
normally i would say yes. the problem has been in the past a motherboard and or video card. ive called microsoft a few years ago. they gave me a new key. No, it was not a oem like HP. it was a built computer. getting a new key because i updated or upgraded was not a problem.
you can call microsoft and call. they never refused a new key.

basically what tremmor is saying is if its a custom built computer or prebuilt by say a computer shop around you not dell, hp, etc.. when you upgrade parts it may ask you to activate your os again. which all you have to do is call ms support tell them you upgraded the motherboard and it asked you to activate and they will give you an activation key.

in hp and such i dont see this working but it might.
 
windows 7 works fine. do ya need it. maybe not. works well. i would get a minimum of Pro.

always liked xp. no problem. start it up after the upgrade. i would not buy 7 because of upgrade. get it going again. then you can upgrade if ya want too. i just just did it because its another adventure. its either now or later. just wanted to get familiar with it.

I Think what im going to do is get 2x 1GB ram kit, New case, Power plant (at least 600w) and a video card. Not going to upgrade motherboard right now. im going to wait till im willing to do a all new computer.
 
you may want to upgrade the motherboard first as you may buy good parts now that dont fit in the new mobo

what mother board do you have atm
