optical out vs....whatever else

i recently tried out a pair of 200 dollar sony wireless headphones meant to be used with newer tv's that allow for optical out.

anything i play on that tv with dolby digital....sounds better than any surround system i've ever heard (unless i count professionally installed pieced-together theatre systems that i could never afford).

my question is if i buy a sound card for my pc that has an optical out jack on the back, and use these headphones....would it be the best for fps games?? price is not a problem but i'm not going to spend a thousand just to hear footsteps a weeee bit sooner.

so, what's the best of the best for fps games?? soundcard with optical headphones? or something else?

I've never actually heard of optical out headphones. Do the headphones have DACs onboard? And if that's the case, it doesn't matter what soundcard you get as the DAC is in the headphones not in the soundcard.

Generally you'll do better with 5.1 surround sound systems or headphones for gaming. The surround sound package really helps you locate enemies better than regular stereo or 2.1 systems.

hey thanks for the reply!

does DAC= digital to analog??

i'm not sure how to answer that but i'm pretty sure the answer is that yes, they are onboard.

either onboard or on the wireless base.

they can decode/put out dts, dolby digital 5.1, and dolby pro logic II. it sounds AMAZING on action movies i've tried out on vudu, but i'm still waiting for a few more days of break-in before i give it a real rating.

so would you still choose a analog+sound card headphone setup?? i have no knowledge of optical so i don't know if it's better for a computer setup or not.

also, you can turn off the dac i just realized that. if i switch the 'effect' button on the base of the wireless station from cinema to off the decoding light turns off and goes to stereo or whatever is doing the decoding.

I can't give you any suggestions regarding your current headphones because I've never dealt with those kinds before. All I can say is that most people who are hardcore into headphones use dedicated amps to drive them. There are a few sound cards outside with headphones amps onboard, otherwise you'll need separate external headphone amps.
