Like eBay?

I bought a tablet on eBay last year. It was defective, but the guy replaced it at no cost to me. The replacement was also defective, so I sent it back and got a full refund. I got another tablet from another seller and it works perfectly.

It's tricky. Most people that sell them don't know anything about laptops.

Your first time purchasing did you request a new one or an old one? Was it a defective brand new laptop.

The most important thing is to read the description clearly and check the sellers feedback, if this is on ebay.

so long as you pay through paypal and use a reputable seller, as in alot of transactions and 98%+ feedback, you should be fine.

If you get a defective product or what you didn't pay for, you can request a replacement/refund. If they refuse, then you can use the paypal safety net, because you can start a dispute with the seller, and you will end up getting your money back after a couple of weeks or so, getting rid of just about all risk.

Remember to read the product information though!!

As Aastii said, buyers have pretty much completely protection when it comes to eBay. However, if you do buy a laptop, you're going to want to test it pretty rigorously. Some people try and unload lemons on eBay with problems that may not be immediately apparent, such as a dieing hard drive or overheating.

Make sure to read their return policy as well. Some won't accept returns.

Irrelevant. If the item isn't as described, you can file a claim through PayPal any time within 45 days of the auction end, and they'll force a refund. I've seen sellers try and get away with lying about an items condition by saying "no returns" or "as is", but it just doesn't fly.

I didn't "request" anything. I searched for the tablet I wanted and bought it. It was listed as used and refurbished, so I knew for the most part that I was getting something used.
