One volume knob for three cables

I have a 4.1 sound system, 2 pairs of speakers and a guitar amp as a subwoofer. They all have their separate cables and volumes, and I was wondering how I would go about making a volume knob for all three cables? Just cut them up, solder to a trimpot and put the volume knob inside a box of some sort?

Ok, Your gutair amp will already be powerd internally, how are you powering your other 2 pairs of speakers? Do you want seperate control of all the speaker groups? I would strongly reccomend having at least your sub on a seperate channel.

This is were my expertees starts to kick in now!

The first pair of speakers are Philips MC-110 speakers which have their own powersource, the other pair of speakers have their own powersource. I wan't to be able to set the volume of all speakers (except for the subwoofer) with one knob.

Ok, thats pretty easy them. Im asuming that your speakers both have jack connectors. So what you need is some sort of plastic case, about 10x10 cm. Next will be 2 panel mount 3.5mm stereo sockets, and mount both of these on 1 side of the box. Then take your sockets and solder them onto a rotaing potentiometer(a twist switch). Finaly take the outputs of you potentiometer and wire them onto a single stereo socket ideally on the opposite side to the 2 other stereo inputs. The last single stereo socket will be your input and you can them use a jack to jack to connect to your computer.

Oh and the you will need a splitter to give and input to your sub aswell as your speakers.

this can be achieved also by using windows sound manager, and maybe a keyboard with a volume +/-
