On-Board Sound Problem

Ive been having problems using a microphone and headphones at the same time. It seems as though the headphones work fine but microphone isnt working. I did a little poking around and when i right click the mixer in the task bar it says

Code:
Chip Version: CMI8738 6 CH without SPDIF

Configuration:

Line-In and rear speaker output share the same jack

Microphone and Subwoofer share the same jack
The mother board is a Asus A7V266-E

How do i change this configuration? Is this why the microphone isnt being recognized? Ive installed the drivers. Is there another application that i need to install?

I also have a second sound card but when i plug it into the PCI slot, it seems to conflict with the onboard sound and makes the computer freeze. How can i disable onboard sound (if this is a solution)?

Urgent help would be appreciated (Guild meeting possibly tonight).

Thanks once again
Jake

Your problem there is having plugged the mic into the wrong jack while using the onboard sound. Check to see if the board has a mic in as well as a line in jack. The reason for the conflicts being seen when installing an expansion card for sound is not having disabled the onboard sound when going to use it. After installing any pci type sound card you first go into the system bios and disable the onboard there. The next step is to remove the drivers for onboard so you can have a clean install of the drivers/software for the pci card.
