On-board sound device missing???

I've acquired a 2nd hand Dell Dimension 2350, with XP preloaded and everything appears to be working fine except for the onboard/integrated sound.

When I attempt to play an audio file through WMP I am told the audio device is missing. I'm assuming this means I have no sound card, but audio is built into the motherboard!

There doesn't appear to be any obvious damage to the system, so what could be the problem?

Go into the device manager and see if there are any devices still needing drivers, you will see yellow question marks next to the them.

I checked everything in device manager under "sound, video, game controllers" and everything shows as working properly and no question marks. That was before I read your reply. I'll have to post what is listed there later, as I'm not sure what should be listed that makes onboard audio work.:o

Is there somewhere I can find how the onboard sound device should be listed?
