Okay, next problem - blank screen?

I connected my old laptop (toshiba PSM59E) to my TV earlier using a S-video to scart adapter. When I did that, the screen on my laptop went blank and the picture transferred to the TV, rather than just duplicating the image as I expected. That in itself wasn't a problem, but when I disconnected the TV the screen was still blank. I have since restarted several times, and up until the splash screen the screen is fine. After that though the screen goes blank. I hear the beeps that are meant to happen and the fan keeps going, just no screen. When I booted up in safe mode it was absolutely fine, no problems whatsoever. When I plug the TV in again no screen appears on there either. Any ideas? Thanks very much in advance.

I didn't have to use that, it transferred automatically. I've managed to restore the screen by using system restore, but then the same thing happens when I plug it back into the TV. I tried using fn+f5 to transfer the screen back to the laptop, but although the TV screen flickered in response, it didn't do anything.
