NTLDR Missing

I have an old gateway solo laptop, 750 megaherts I think. I have not used it in a few months and when I turned it on today it said NTLDR is missing & would not go any further. I looked it up online and it said the boot files might be damaged or my bios needs upgrading. Seeing that I could not see how the boot files could be damaged, as it has not been used, I went into the bios, looked around and everything looked correct so I clicked on "Load default settings" saved and rebooted & it booted into Windows XP without anymore problems. So how would you think this error message came to be? Also I looked for a bios upgrade on Gateways website and it said there was no bios ugrade available. I have a new laptop & was thinking of giving this one to my niece.
 
Stranger things have happened when you don't use a system in a long time. Don't feel too bad, I've seen systems that don't even boot up after being off for a long period of time.
