not sure what wireless equipment i need

well this is more for a friend of mine than me...but ill just give you a hypothetical situation here:

there is a college dorm shared by lets say 3-4 ppl who all have laptops with wireless capabilities...the college does not have Wi-Fi in the actual dorm rooms but instead has cabled hookups...

the object is to make it to where the roommates can access their internet wirelessly within the room.

basically im not sure whether my friend would need an access point or a router, shes somewhat technically challenged so itd need to be easy to work with.

also im sure there would be multiple cables going into the room, is there any way to take advantage of this?
 
You'd need a wireless router. Access points are really designed to extend an existing network, a router can split an internet connection by however many laptops are using it at the time. Something like this would be suitable.

What do you mean when you say there'd be multiple cables going to the room? Multiple internet cables? I don't believe a router can group together several connections, for that you'd be needing something like an ethernet multiplexer, but that'd be too complex and expensive to be worth it. Just hook up one of the broadband connections to the router and share it out.
 
An access point(or mine) will work directly off a cable modem. Probably not a DSL because it doesn't have anything to sign in as some routers do, but that would work if you ALWAYS used wireless... Otherwise, yeah, router's the way to go.
 
get a nice router from best buy or something. you can get them for like 10 bucks with a rebate now. if all the laptops have integrated wireless just connect to the network. make sure and i cant stress this enough to set up the WEP feature so no one logs onto your network. I've had my wireless since it came out and someone was on my network and i had no idea until the police came to my door, apparantly this person was a kazaa guru or something and had like 3000 illegal songs.
