Ok so basically I am wanting to upgrade my laptop soon, however I don't want to go out and have someone tell me what I should have for a gazillion pounds, so I am gong to build my own desktop.

What I need today is some tips and a decent budget, bear in mind I don't have a job and while I would like to spend upwards of $1000 I can't.

I am english but will be buying both american and english.

I, at the moment, have set a budjet of £200 - 300 (possilbly 400) which is about $300 - $450 (possilbly $600)

Can I get a decent spec'd computer for this? Also I don't mind buying used,

I just really want some tips, good sites or even direct products you think would be good to get me going,

Thanks,

Connor

If you are in the UK (they may ship to mainland Europe).
www.ebuyer.co.uk
www.overclockers.co.uk
www.svp.co.uk
These three are usually very reliable.
And www.aprmedia.com !

They're also excellent. In fact I use svp and apr mostly. I'm wary of eBuyer as they seem to operate in a very low-customer service orientated way similar to dabs.com so beware of that. I'll check the other one out though Dee - cheers.

What do you want to use it for? Where in Europe are you?

Start with a monitor. I really suggest you aren't shy with the monitor fund, because you will have the same monitor, even as you upgrade your desktop again. So get a good monitor.

I recently built a rig that cost me $270 Cad. But I already had purchased the $230 monitor earlier, and if you want a genuine copy of Windows, that's another $50 (people sell used genuine copy of Windows XP in local classifieds, but be careful, it has limitations if it is OEM or already registered).

Thanks for the great sites I am checking those out now. I am in the UK and I will basically be using it for various tasks, ranging to video and photo and sound editing.

I have a monitor so the monitor I am not too fussed about that, what is the spec of your build and can I see some pics please?

Thanks,

This is my value gaming computer:

NEW:
55.99 - BIOSTAR MCP6P M2+
49.99 - AMD AM2 Dual-Core [2.3Ghz x 2]
29.99 - Patriot 2GB 800mhz CL5
39.99 - Corona MicroATX Case with 500watt Power Supply
07.50 - Arctic Cooling 120mm fan
07.50 - Thermal Compound MX-2

USED (parts I found in local classifieds):
10.00 - AMD AM2+ Heatsink & fan
20.00 - Matrox 7200RPM 160GB
30.00 - XFX Nvidia 7600GT

I didn't buy optical drive (DVD-RW) because I have one on my expensive rig, and I find that I never use it. So when I was install operating system, I just borrowed it from that computer. But you can always find a used CD-RW for $5 in local classifieds, or DVD for $10. New DVD-RW is only $25 CND.

The Nvidia 7600GT is a pretty powerful card. Has fillrate 6.7 bil/s. And because it's PCI-E, it's going to be easy to upgrade it in the future. I can also upgrade the CPU and ram on the computer, but as of right now, it's more than enough for me.

If you buy Retail CPU, it comes with heatsink and fan, and you don't need to buy thermal compound. I tried to save some money, so I bought an OEM CPU, and so I saved about $10, but I only receive 90 day warranty on the CPU instead of 3 years.

Welcome to CF ;)

Right you say £400 is possible, best i could get is £406 without lowering anything else.

Dont know yet if you need an Operating system? If you dont you could take that off the list and double your ram to 4gb or something.

Its not exactly a powerhouse, but should be able to do what you want and you can upgrade/add such stuff as more memory and a better processor at a later date if you wanted.....you could consider getting a sound card at a later date such as the asus xonar DS which will set you back around £39.
