No sound with new pci card

I recently fried my mobo so i ended up swapping an asus one out of an hp my buddy had. I couldn't get the onboard sound to work, so i just got a cheap sabrent sound card off of tigerdirect. Unfortunately i cant get this thing to work either. Right now I have it as close as i've gotten it to working, or seeming like it should, but still no dice. The device manager says its there and working fine. Even my sound control now has the controls for 5.1 sound. Still i cant get anything coming from the speakers. I've tried different speakers and headphones. Also tried uninstalling and re-installing the drivers and whatnot. Most recently i pulled the card out and started over and thats where i'm at now. The other wierd thing is for some reason it messes up my graphic equalizer graph thing in both winamp and WMP. Winamp it doesnt work at all, and WMP it freezes frequently. Anyone have any ideas? I'm about to break this thing in half.

Are you trying to install it in the first pci slot next to the video card? Try moving it down a slot or two. A common problem seen on XP systems is the resource sharing where sound cards end up having a resource conflict.

I have 3 pci slots on this mobo. The video card is in the top one and the sound one is on the bottom. This is about the only way i could run it because of the fan on the video card.

Dumb question, but you are using the ouputs on the sound card, correct? Have you disabled the onboard sound? Are you trying to use front mic/line out ports? Are the correct jumpers placed if you aren't using the front connections?

I'm running 2.0 sound on the card and its a 5.1 card. I'm thinking i could put the speakers anywhere other than the mic input and they would prolly put out some sound. But yes i have checked each jack and i get nothing. I have not disabled the onboard sound though. I dont know exactly how to go about there. Its not in the device manager under sound thats for sure. the font connections arent hooked up at all since i couldnt get them to work with the new mobo. I dunno for sure what to do with the jumpers.

The onboard sound is disabled in the system bios. You enter that when you first start the system. Usually you press the del key to get into the bios setup unless your post screen shows a different key is assigned. Refer to the board's manual if you don't find it right away.

Thanks for the advice guys. After i disabled the onboard sound it started working. The wierd thing now is that winamp is still choppy. WMP isnt though. Any thoughts on why this is? i tried uninstalling/reinstalling winamp but it didnt clear it up. Still sounds like i'm trying to open like 10 programs at once while listening to music.

Winamp is a waste! I'll put it in those terms. While preferring WMP 10 the full version of WMP 11 has been doing well here lately. I've tried and quickly removed winamp on a few occasiions for better multimedia playback with other programs. There are some freewares that usually run good if you need a link.
