Hi there, my friend's laptop is having this sound problem: No sound on the speakers but able to hear sound from the external speakers. We had checked all setting just in case we had silence it accidentally. Pls help and thanks in advance.

Is the warranty still valid? If it's a hardware problem the best solution is to return the laptop to the shop you bought it from so they can fix it.

It can be,and propably it is an internal wire or connection problem. And it's a bit difficult to fix those kind of problems by yourself on a laptop...

the drivers are installed right?
if you go into device manager (right click my computer -> manage -> device manager) you can look for sound devices and it should have an exclamation mark (!) if something isnt installed, or if its not working for some reason.

I need to play a sound when the user mouse overs a certain link. My code works in IE but nothing happens in firefox 1.5, i've tried several codes but i still can't play sounds in firefox.

ask him if he's ever taken apart the laptop, (or even just opened up one of the panels for RAM) because I had a laptop where the speakers were under the palm rest, but to add ram or anything you would have to lift out the keyboard and open it up that way, but if you weren't careful you could easily disconnect the speaker wires. If you open it up, and everything is connected properly and you still don't get sound, maybe you could just modify the wiring in the laptop and solder directly to the port for the external speaker.

Now I've just had another thought:
There is usually a switch inside external connector, if something is messing up that switch, that could be whats causing the internal speakers to not work. Try plugging something in to the external port and jiggling the connector around a little bit and unplugging it again, and try a few times see if that could do it. I've had that happen to me before (not on a laptop though, but other stuff)

at least you can get sound out, so I don't think theres anything wrong w/ the actual sound interface. I think it might just be a hardware problem w/ the speaker configuration inside the laptop.

good luck

hi there and thanks, we had tried all the above but still bad news; no internal sound. so we formatted the hard disc, re install the window xp and same outcome. any more advice? Pls.

why reinstal windows? :x Just a question.. you say he can connect external speakers, and that works, right? is it a build in soundcard, or is it a PCM-CIA soundcard he connects the external speakerst too?
because if he connects it to the (earphones) power of the build in soundcards,.. you KNOW the soundcard is ok,.. wich would most likely leave the conclussion the connector of the internal speakers could be loose inside.
if its a PCM-CIA or USB soundcard, it could mean that the onboard card isnt installed, or is disabled in the BIOS. ( just what I can make up from it.. :o )

yes Archangel, he can connect external speakers using the hole that the headset does. Both works except the external speakers need to plug in usb port as well. I think it should be a build in card cos no external hardware but we do not know what is a PCM-CIA soundcard. It was a working notebook until not long ago, that no sound out from the notebook speakers. pls advice and thanks.
