No sound in my user profile only

For the last week or so, I have had no sound on my user profile. Not while on the internet, not while using I-tunes, not while doing things that normally cause sounds. My wife, on the other hand, still has sound on her profile, so I know that the speakers are plugged in. I am guessing that a setting is off, but I have no idea what it could be. I have checked the speakers, I have checked the playback control to make sure nothing is muted. I have no idea what else to check, or what it could possibly be. Does anyone have any suggestions about what I should check?
Thanks,
Chris

What kind of computer is it and what kind of Operating System are you running? Is it a Windows machine?

go into sound properties in the control panel.under the sounds tab select windows default then hit apply, and ok.that should restore your windows sounds back to default.

The computer is a Dell, and it is operating system is Windows XP. I tried the audio properties thing where I switched it to Windows default, and nothing happened. I spoke to my wife last night, and she says that now it is happening on her profile as well.
Thanks,
Chris

Confirm your Antivirus software is up to date (usually right click on tray icon and check for updates)
Then download and run Free Malwarebytes > Install it > Update it > And run a full scan
Remove all found Malwares at the end of the Scan by selecting "Next"

My antivirus is working, and I updated Malware, ran it on the deep scan, got one thing, got rid of it, and sound still isn't working. Ugh. Any other thoughts?
Thanks,
Chris

Went there, only two drivers that were optional, and came out in 2005. Neither one would install. Is there a different page where I can get the ORIGINAL driver at?
Thanks
Chris

No
That's the best driver (and original) already
But you may need to do all Windows Service Pack updates first (actually all Security updates preferably)
And you need to be logged on to an Administrator privilidged account, to do this

The other issue is that they wouldn't install because they are already installed
In this case you could check Control Panel > Programs, and uninstall the presently installed ones (software and driver program)

Well, tried that as well, and when I tried to install the drivers, it said it cannot install, and to make sure my sound card is properly installed. Bum sound card, perhaps?
Thanks,
Chris

Go to Device Manager: Start > Run > devmgmt.msc
Locate your Sound device (you may need to click on the + sign to show this)
Then right click on your actual Sound device and enable it

And if that doesn't work, right click on your Sound device and uninstall (or remove) it.
Then restart and try installing your Sound driver again

If it doesn't work in your user account, but it works in another the problem is most likely user account related. There is probably some corrupted profile for your user account somewhere causing this.

What version of Windows is this again?

The computer is a Dell, and it is operating system is Windows XP.
But, good idea, you could try creating a new user account (with Administrator privilidges)
Then testing if sound works on that account
This will prove the Hardware is working and the drivers are correct
