Ok, here is the story, Got a computer handed down to me, It had windows ME. Sound was working. I rebooted and installed XP and now i dont have sound. The error message i am getting is " no audio hardware is available or hardware is not reponding. How can i fix this problem? And just to mention, i am not that great with computers.

thanks for any help

If you can, open up the computer case and make suer the sounds card is secure. Also check that you have a sound driver installed. Check this by right-clicking my computer, properties, hardware, device manager, and look for your sound card or sound device.

if no sound driver, or if it has an issue, let windows try to find a driver (works 20% of the time). If not go to the manufacturers website and get the drivers. If it integrated to mobo go to the mobo website, if it is a "complete" system like dell, emachine, compaq go to their website.

Sometime the drivers become outdated on XP as some sound cards/graphics card etc. updates were not continued as better spec cards were being released this could also be your problem
