I have a real problem, my sound device has disappeared. I reinstalled windows XP but that didn't help. My speakers work fine. Anyone know how to get sound working again. This is an old Vaio

Have you checked that the correct audio drivers have been installed? If it is a desktop you can just right click the driver in device manager and select update if you are connected to the internet.
If it is a laptop you must get the drivers from the manufacturer's website or order a resource CD. I had to pay $20 for gateway to send me a driver disk once, seeing as they only had a few drivers available for download.

New drivers do no good at all. In control panel, sound devices it says there is no sound device and everything is grayed out. There is no sound card just on board so I guess that will be my next step. This all happened right after installing Spybot, I must have gotten a pirated version cause alot of spyware was on there and I reinstalled Windows to rid my macheen of it. This did not get my sound back. Thanks for the in put tho:D

if you reinstalled windows and it didnt recognize your audio as a device and ask for a driver, then there could be something wrong physically. i've got a computer behind me right now running strong with a blown capacitor. the capacitor was apparently part of the onboard sound device, so no sound. everything else works perfectly though. funny part about that computer is that it was my mum's machine and it would crash almost every day and i would have to reinstall windows every time i got home. i got tired of that and bought her a new one, works great. i was messing around with this one carelessly and a loose wire touched the board when it was running and there was a pop and a puff of smoke. rebooted fine and it hasnt crashed since :D

and would u mind some instructions as to how this is done, even those microsoft techies don't know!
