No sound, but it thinks there is.

Hi folks. I am at my wits end. I have a compaq presario v2000 that I had to re-install windows xp pro on. When we got the laptop, it had xp on it, then we tried out the trial of windows 7. for both of these we had sound, but now, I am trying to install the sound driver from the compaq website, and neither of the 2 options work. The first one wont even install. The second one installs, and lets me play music in wmp, but there is no sound. The visualization works just fine, but no sound out of the speakers, or headphone port. I have checked all the volume things I can find, I have no clue whats up.
Any ideas?

I fumbled around, and got it to work. I installed the ac'97 driver from the realtek website. I got a little yellow "!" next to the device. I went into propertied for it, and updated allowing the search online. It updated to the correct one, where if i just let it find from the beginning, it installed the ac'97.
