No Sound - Bad Board?

I can't get any sound from an ASUS M4A89GTD PRO.

I've installed the drivers. The annoying support guy says the board is bad and didn't send some fix he suggested.

Is there anything I can do? I'd hate to install another board. I'm just finishing a build.

Does the device manager show that the driver is properly installed? Are the speakers plugged into the correct port? Do you have any other devices in device manager that needs a driver? if you have hd audio then you need to make sure that the microsoft uaa bus driver for high definition audio is installed before the actual sound driver can be installed. The uaa driver will be listed under system devices if its installed properly.

I'm so disappointed, I just installed a Realtec HD Windows XP codec thinking that would solve the problem and it did not.

Yes.

Are the speakers plugged into the correct port?

Yes.

Do you have any other devices in device manager that needs a driver?

I think so. There are question marks for "Other Devices" which includes question marks for the SM Bus Controller and Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller.

I regret to say I'm not sure what you're talking about. Can you dumb it down?

Thanks much!

Is there any chance the speakers are too antiquated to be used? They seem quality...a left and right with a subwoofer.

On my old gateway (purchased in '99), there was a trick to getting the audio to work. I was running XP, I had to click on the master volume window (containing all the difference volume levels), options, properties, advanced, and either click or unclick a radio button saying something like "digital output" or something. Strange that radio button is not on this new computer with XP but that must be because of the HD audio on this system.

Go into the device manager and click the plus sign next to where it says system devices. See if there is an entry in there that says "microsoft uaa bus driver for high definition audio"

Then it sounds like you have a bad sound chip. Is the volume control turned up? Go into audio properties and make sure you have the right output selected.

HD audio = high definition audio
ac97 = standard audio

What type of speakers do you have? Do they work in another system?

Yes, the speakers worked fine in my last system.

When you plug the audio connector into the motherboard...I have the HD plug plugged in and the ac97 not plugged in. Is that right?

Those cables go to the case speaker and mic connections. Are you plugging your speakers into the back of the computer or the front of the case? You need to plug them into the back of the computer.

John, I just plugged a line from the board to the speakers in my monitor as a test. I have sound.

The old speakers plug looks like it's missing a rubber pick up(or whatever you call it) in the plug.

I'm sorry to have been a problem tonight; I had no idea the plugs could be the same size but work differently.

Thank you for helping me work through this. What a mess but at least it's over.

You rock.
