No sound at all!

I don't know that much about computers and this has been driving me crazy for a while now.

I made the mistake of not activating Norton Antivirus 2006 the first time i installed. Now, no matter what i do, i can't get it to work. In my attempt to get it working, I did a system restore. But this has now made my computer look kinda 'windows 95'. The toolbars are all grey and stuff.

But the system restore also took away my sound. I've looked at a lot of different sites that say i should go system restore via start> all programs > accessories > system tools. But this just says, "System Restore has been turned off. Do you want to turn it on?".

I'm not sure what sound driver/sound card my computer has, but when i go to control panels > sound devices it says no audio devices, and nothing is displayed when i hit the hardware tab. In addition to this, when i go to things like 'service' (via start > run), it comes up for about 4 seconds, then disappears.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd really really appreciate it:)

It's hard to know whether there's one cause to all those problems, it seems like the system restore failed in some way, but I don't know how to be more specific than that.

If you have the original Windows disk, perhaps perform a repair install of Windows? The audio driver can most likely be reinstalled from the driver disk that came with the pc, if you don't have that, then cpu-z will be able to tell you your motherboard model and then you can download it from the manufacturer's website.

But I feel your pc's problems run deeper than just a missing driver or two...

Yeah I agree completely, there are quite a few things that seem to be going faulty on my computer. I'll see if there's something I can do

Thanks for the advice:D

I got Norton Antivirus working and everything seems to be back to normal (the appearance has gone from Windows Classic to Windows XP again, services.msc doesn't disappear anymore etc.). But the sound is still gone! I tried to get my system information at http://www.d-a-l.com/hardware-scan.php but it only showed what ActiveX version i have, so i still don't know what sound driver to get! I know my speakers work because I tried themon other machines and they worked fine.

I'm just wondering what i need, a sound card or a sound driver, or something else?!
