Are you using onboard or an installed pci type sound card? One tool for identifying a board is to get the bios id number off of the board itself and enter that into a calculator like the one seen at http://www.motherboards.org/moboidtools.html For other hardwares installed you can type in "msinfo32" at the Run prompt found right off of the Start menu. That will bring up the system information screen for the various hardwares. Asking your friend what board and hardwares were installed can be a bigger help since he would have first hand information there.

when you choose for it to searchf or the best drivers for your device windows will only searchd rivers installed on your pc...likely as pc eye said you need to get your motherboard serial number to find out exactly what it is so you can download the specific drivers for your audio.....or call up the friend you bought it from and ask him

Matching the specific drivers depends primarily on the model while some will standardize with AC'97 Realtec you want the precise match. With some devices the automatic search Windows performs will occasionally show an updated version for a specific device. But that is often lacking for sound and video alike. You see that mainly with modems and usb devices used for internet connection. If you got the user manual along with the build that would be the biggest help there. For an expansion card is it Creative, Pine, or another make? If Creative for example what model? Each model has it's own set of specific drivers.
