No Audio Output Device Is Installed

My Laptop Computer seems not to be recognizing its speakers. The sound icon in the system tray claims that NO AUDIO OUTPUT DEVICE IS INSTALLED. Last week the speakers and sound configuration was perfectly fine. Somewhere along the line the computer began to fail to recognize its speakers...How can I fix it?
 
the way it has happened to me a few times before was that the sound was disabled in the bios. im not sure if you can get to the bios on your laptop, but its worth a try.
