NIC cards vs. onboard ethernet

hi,

out of interest r NIC cards (where u put it into a PCI slot) beta or work beta than onboard ethernet?

They're about the same. Only diff. is if you treasure your slots...then it's a waste, seeing as how many mobos come with onboard.

I think thats all of them, Eny who The timings on the cards are usualy 10/100/1000. Onboard usualy has 10/100. This meaning the cards can get 1000Mbps and onboard gets 100Mbps. Now what does this mean, if your only using it for internet (1-2Mbps) onboard will be fine but if your in a giant network(1000Mbps) that transfers alot of files all the time you want the card because it is faster. I hope that cleared it up a little bit. :)

Well on most newer (within the last half a year) motherboard chipsets, onboard LAN is gigabit (1000 Mbps).

I have heard that using onboard takes up slightly more CPU cycles than a PCI NIC... However, they comsume slightly more power.

NICs are an after thought - onboard or PCI really makes no difference. I like onboard just because it keeps a slot open.

i am not sure, but i think its all in how ure board is designed. if it has a IC for controlling the NIC (whether on board or add in board) then it wont use cpu cycles. if it just has small IC's typically it just passes the burden of processing to the CPU.
