Newbie trying to connect laptop and desktop!!

Hey there guys.

I'm new to all this networking so i'm hoping someone can help me out! I've had my desktop computer connected to the Internet via my Linksys Wireless router (WAG354G) for sometime now. I've just purchased a new laptop which I'd like to network with my desktop so i can share files. The laptop connects to the router fine via wireless and can connect to the Internet. But I'm not sure how i can get the laptop and desktop to network so i can share files and the printer on the desktop.

Well, you can just go into Network Options and setup a home or office network sharing so that it is enabled and your pc and laptop is ready to connect.

Next, you should give all your pc and laptop that are connection online a set ip address, such as your desktop being 192.168.1.101 and your laptop being 192.168.1.102

Your printer, if it is network capable could be 103, and so on. Then they should all be able to share and connect to eachother using the linksys router as the source. Just make sure they are all on the same DNS and everything.

Sorry to sound stupid but complete newbie here!!!
How do i set an ip address for each computer, i've set up the sharing with the home and office wizard on the desktop but i cant on the laptop, when it askes for the network adaptor it only shows the network card not the wirless.

For each computer, go into your control panel>network options

There, you should see "Local Area Connection" if they are connected via wires (your desktops). Right click on it and pick "Properties."

There, you should see a list with checkboxes. Scroll down, or if it's there, double click on TCP/IP and there you will have to manually set all of those.

All those values, you can find on your router setup. Usually typing 192.168.1.1 into your browser. Since it's a liksys, check on the page called "Status" and it should give you all the info you need. As for the ip's, you can just setup them as I have said above, 101, 102, 103, and so forth.

For your laptop wireless, you should do the same thing, but instead of clicking "Local Area Connection" click on the wireless settings.

When done, all of them should be able to recognize eachother cause they will all be going through the router. If not, make sure they are all on the same workgroup. To check, right click on MY COMPUTER. Click on the COMPUTER NAME tab and check the workgroup name. If they are different from eachother, click on "change" and give them all the same name.
