New SATA drive is here...problems

So I've installed the new drive in my pc. When I turn on the machine it tries to verify the DMI Pool Data and then tries to boot from CD/DVD twice. I then get DISK BOOT FAILURE.

Just curious, do I need to boot a new OS from the CD? I haven't even formatted the drive yet. It sees it in the BIOS. Thanks for any help!

Gateway 831GM 2005
New WD Black HD 1TB
SATA connected to SATA110 on board

Sorry, I do have a new motherboard in there. Gigabyte ga-g31m-es2l.

Maybe I'm just being dumb, but do I need to boot the OS from CD and then format the disk? I've worked with computers before, but never have done a new hard drive.

If you get to the OS installation you can format it from there, but you shouldn't need to.

EDIT: I recently had a problem with booting from the disc so I made a disc image from the CD on my pen drive, and booted from USB.

Just noticed this. The motherboard states a SATA 3gb/s storage device, but not 6gb/s. This new drive is 6gb/s. Does it need to go back?

Yes, exactly. Once you boot from the OS disc, it will ask you where you want to install the OS.
Do a quick Format and you'll be on your way.

No, the drive will work. It just won't run at the rate the board is capable of.

Looks like I need to search for the package that came with my computer to find the OS disk. All I have is the XP number on the back of the PC right now. But I do have a whole bunch of boxes to rifle through to find that plastic bag containing all the info.

No he said the drive was 6 and the board was 3. So would that slow down the drive or not allow it to run at all?

Sata6 and Sata3 are backwards compatible, and no traditional mechanic HDD can saturate a SATA3 interface.

Boot from the CD, quick format the disk, install windows. done!
