New router

Hi, i just bought a new router, a D-Link DI-624. took me a while to figure out that my wireless av receiver was interfering with the wireless. anyhow, after getting the internet up and running on both desktop and laptop, i found that i couldnt access the files on either computers. i normally thought windows xp automatically configures networks.. but i guess i was wrong. the error message that pops up includes, "is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource." do i have to re set up the network? i actually just followed to quick start instructions in the d-link .. so that might be it..
also.. i cant seem to port forward some of my ports on the router.. =\ never realised how complicated port forwarding is.. such a hassle.
sorry if this seems a bit unclear, kinda in a rush.
thanks

So what you on xp?

and the question was, how to set up access to the files from either computer?

If these are correct then you need to go to your network properties and set it up to work with files

ooh yeah sorry. yeah im on xp. and there were two questions : how to properly set up the network to transfer files etc. , port forwarding on my router.
i think ive set it up to work with files already.

Ive tried that, in the D-Link DI624 section, under the program uTorrent. in the setting up the static ip address part, it asks me to copy down the 'DNS servers'. in the picture they have two servers, and when entering it into the tcp\ip properties it asks me to input two different dns addresses. when i type ipconfig into cmd, it only comes up with one dns server.. i remember somewhere that my isp (optus in aus) doesnt allow static ip addresses.. i think..

Sorry for delay.

You don't need to fill the alternate DNS server.

That's the connection between your computer and router, not internet.

I have mine set to 192.168.1.1 (router), 192.168.1.3 (my computer).

Your router IP address might be different. (it's 192.168.0.1)

Ahh great! thanks filip-matijevic! works perfectly now.
can anyone help me with my network problems now? (accessing the other computer)

Open your bnetwork conections

right click on the selected network

poperties > advanced > tick the internet conection sharing box

that should do it but i am not great on networking :0

Thanks for the reply maka, but it's not my internet connection sharing, that's all controlled through my router (which works all fine), it's just the file sharing.
Dont know if ive mentioned this already, but on both computrers all drives are shared

make sure all computers are i the same workgroup (right click my computer, should be listed on the first page)
Then on the computer where you want to share something, right click on the folder and share it. If you have a wep key on the wireless go ahead and share everything (the HD).

I've checked all that workgroup stuff, shared everything. ive even tried to redo the wizard ("set up home or small office network") with the same settings on both laptop and desktop. still doesnt work..the desktop sees the laptop..but cant get in.. the laptop cant even see itself yet..i dunno what the problem is..
