New processor and now my sound sucks

Hello everyone, glad to have found this place, it looks like there is alot of helpful information here as well as good communication. I have a question.

I just upgraded from an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ to an AMD X2 4600+. I also have a Creative X-Fi Xtreme Gamer Sound Card. I went to go back in and play Battlefield 2142 and the sound sucks now, it sounds like the speakers are blown. I updated and installed the new sound drivers but it didn't help. Any suggestions???
 
That sounds like the early SP2 problems seen with XP where Microsoft has a registry fix and AMD released a patch for their dual core models. This is where you see performance loss and other problems running a dual core model. The MS fix is in the article seen at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896256

The registry edit was initially applied to server boards running two cpus not and was applied to problems seen with SP2 with dual core models. You can give this a try to see if it helps there.
