New or used desktop?

I am in need of a new desktop. My current desktop is an old HP running XP. It is on its last legs it looks like. I went to Frys today and looked at new computers. I then stopped by a local computer repair store that I have used before to repair my laptop. The local guy says what I should get is a used Dell that he has, currently running Vista. He tells me that this is as good as or better than a new computer as it will be just as fast, etc. I trust the guy to a point. It just doesn't sound right that I am going to get the same or better performance by spending $325 on his used one as opposed to buying a new Windows 8 unit. The local guy tells me that I can install Windows 8 on the Dell that he has and it will be as good as or better than a new computer, for about half the price. I am looking to spend no more than $600 total on a desktop alone. I am planning on buying a flat screen TV for a monitor as opposed to a regular computer monitor. My main use will be for my eBay based home business. No games, just having to access pictures, etc. It will also be used for general internet, computer use. I have a 2 TB external hard drive so I don't necessarily need a huge internal hard drive on my next computer. I plan to buy a new laptop around Christmas but want to get the desktop in a month or so. Any help y'all can give me on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You can get some pretty good deals on used computers from a couple of years ago which will more than powerful enough for you, but if a new system isn't much more expensive, I'd go with a new system. A basic machine (which is all you need) can be had pretty cheaply. Something like this Lenovo would be fine for you I reckon http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883265286 of course you can always spend a little more if you wish.

Make sure you have 7 or 8. Forget about XP and Vista now.

Totally agree with spirit do not be conned into getting vista, although i had no problem with vista it is by far one of the most disliked systems ever and it certainly is not as smooth as windows 7.

In general i would not trust any computer shop, there are 4 independent computer shops in my town and i have come across numerous cases that they have ripped people off by overcharging and shoddy repairs and i would say they are not an exception.

Even with a $600 budget you should be able to get a brand new system that is leaps ahead of you old xp one.

Where are you located so people can recommend companies for your area.
