Here's what I'm getting on saturday (can't wait):

- Canon EOS 350D with 18/55mm (it's a start...)
- Canon Battery Grip BG-E3 (stability+more battery time)
- SanDisk Extreme III 2 Gb

Looks good, got any specs? Also I'm guessing the battery pack is rechargable...thats a good thing. Now days expensive cameras come with AA batteries that last for like 20 pics...how stupid.

That's a true SLR, correct? I'd like something like that, but they're just so darn expensive! I can't justify spending $1000 on a digital camera. I barely can justify it for my computer!

I was confused at first why anyone wouls want a 17-55 lens. Then I checked the detailed specs and it is the same as a 28-65 in 35 mm format. PERFECT.

A beautiful camera indeed

Good question though.

1) That is a true SLR
2) True passion has no price :D ==> spending 1100 $ USD on this thing (everything included)!!

Well I could buy a super expensiver Lithium-Ion or 2 to put in there, but I won't, Im putting 6*AAs in there. Besides, I'm not really buying the thing for more battery power (although I'm glad to have it), it's mainly for stability and comfort when holding.

Pulled from review. Great site.

Geeze... And here I'm not even wanting to get the Panasonic FZ-20 for $300 :P It's not a 'true' SLR but about as close as you can get...

Awesome, the Canon EOS line is god-like. I personally am a fan of DSLR's, but thats cuz' im lazy and poor and cant afford to develop my own prints either. You'll get good quality prints with that camera im sure.

One thing you might be interested in buying is a remote. I like taking nighttime shots, but even with a tripod you have to touch the camera which can fuzz the quality. i think they are relatively cheap, and make for much stabler(sp?) shots.

The remote is just a wireless link to the camera, that snaps the shot when you click the button (it's kind of a kit). i know they make them for the canon eos series i've seen a few people use them. i guess you could use the self timer, a remote is just another option.

Its nice having a good camera. My ex employer was a photographer, and he had a pentax camera. Not sure what model it was, but it was a hell of a nice one.

I havn't bought new camera equipment for years. Now they call the Slave unit "remotes" and charge a fortune. You can buy a salve unit(photo electric that changes light energy to electrical energy) to set off remote flash unit for about$25. Been usingthem for decades.
For true night photos(pitch black object at long distance where even the most powerful flash units arn't enough) place camera on tripod, shutter held open if your camera has that option and slowly "paint" the subject with a bright spotlight. Don't worry about overexposure. You can even walk around the subject"painting". Just don't get in the picture..

That's a bummer about your camera, but better to send it back then keep it. It'll be back soon enough.

I have the Digital Rebel (300D), the predecessor to that camera. I think I've had it about 2 years now. It was the first Digital SLR under 1K. Still works great and still take great pictures. It's not the top of the line but Canons cmos sensor takes a very smooth picture.

That camera should have come with a rechargable battery and the charger for it? I bought an extra battery as the camera can use them up quickly.

That lense is a good starter lens and I got one also with my camera but I haven't used it in quite a while. I've got 5 lenses now and I prefer my primes the best.

Have fun with it and enjoy.

You will love the "XT". Your compact flash is a good choice as the XT does show better performance with a faster card, though I do have to say it doesn't use any speed faster than the Ultra II, but with that said most people don't understand that the "Extreme" marketing is for those that use their cameras in extreme varying environments. BTW, I have a Canon 10D and 20D, and will probably sell the 20D and buy the 30D soon. Be prepared to spend "big" for great lenses. I started out with that EFS 18-55mm and now have it, 28mm, 50mm, 28-75mm, and 70-200mm.

Well my camera is not an expensive camera (Finepix S5100), but I have to say I love the fact it takes AA battery's. I can take well over 300 4MP pictures on a set of rechargeable battery's. I carry with the camera an extra set and they have a 1 hour charge time. My wife has a Sony cybershot camera with a rechargeable battery that takes about 4 hours to charge! The batter is so expensive she opted not to get a spare :'(. So I love rechargeable AA battery camera's.

That's what the self timer is for :P Some have a 2 second self timer :D

A remote is often more desirable than the self timer. You know exactly when the shutter is going to trip versus relying on the timer.

You didn't happen to initally try to insert the CF incorrectly did you? I have seen many many cases of this happening.

Again, welcome to an exciting hobby.

No, I inserted it correctly.

And I bought the Extreme III because the Ultra II was unavailable, and I was impatient. And it was only like 15$ more. No big deal.

Then, sounds like you did good! Hopefully I didn't agitate you too much by telling you something that you may or may not have known. Happy Shooting.
