OK
here's the specs-
DFI Lanparty forget the exact model (it only has one ethernet port)
512MB RAM
160GB seagate sata drive
AMD 3500+

I installed windows last night, and the internet did not work. The first time I went to network connections, there was a connection there, and it said enabled, but still wasn't working. This morning, there wasn't any connection there at all. I click create a new network connection, and this dial-up thing pops up.

The driver CD does not have any network drivers on it.

When it asked you to put in an area code did you skip that step? If you did, it wont install the network stuff...

You would think... Yes put it in, and everything should work fine.. I know it sounds stupid, but I have had it personally happen. I don't even think it has to be a correct area code, put something in.

well i put it in, and now when I pick add a new connection, a lot more options are open

but, when I do
setup broadband> always on
it says it should already work, but there is only the 1394 (firewire) connection under network connections..

Does the ethernet adaptor show up in the device manager? Is it listed as being ok? You are saying it does not show a lan or high speed connection Icon?

yes, cannot seem to find it now

but it has it and tells me to set it up using microsoft network setup
then it tells me to use modify.exe (included in the package) to modify config.sys, but it just flashes the black box and dissappears right away, how can I make it stay?

edit- the network adapter does not show up in the device manager
